Diwali in Goa 2026: Dates, Traditions & Villas

Last updated: November 2026

Diwali in Goa is unlike Diwali anywhere else in India. The biggest night is the one before Diwali, when towns and villages build giant effigies of the demon Narakasur and burn them before dawn. The day itself is quieter: lamps, family, Lakshmi Puja and a lot of good food. Here is everything you need to plan a Diwali holiday in Goa, from the 2026 dates to the best villas for families.

Quick answer

  • Diwali 2026: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 8 November.
  • Narakasur night: Saturday, 7 November. Effigies are burned in the early hours of Sunday.
  • Best places to see effigies: Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Ponda and Vasco.
  • Best base: a North Goa villa in Guirim, Assagao or Siolim, close to Mapusa.
  • Book: now. The Friday to Tuesday long weekend is popular with families.

When is Diwali 2026?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. In Goa, the main celebration is Narak Chaturdashi, the night before.

How Goa celebrates Diwali

Narakasur night: Goa's biggest Diwali tradition

For weeks before Diwali, neighbourhood groups build Narakasur effigies from bamboo, paper and cloth. Some are small. Others are several metres tall, with moving parts and lights. Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Ponda and Vasco are known for the biggest ones, and many towns hold competitions to judge them.

On the night of Narak Chaturdashi, the effigies are displayed and paraded through the streets, with music and crowds building towards midnight. They are burned in the early hours before dawn, marking the victory of good over evil. Timings vary from village to village, so ask locally on the day. You can read more on the Incredible India page for Narak Chaturdashi.

The morning after: kareet and fov

Early in the morning, many Goan families take a ritual oil bath. A small bitter fruit called kareet is crushed underfoot, a symbol of the demon's defeat. Then comes breakfast: fov (beaten rice, or poha) made several ways, sweet and savoury, and shared with family and neighbours.

Lamps, lanterns and Lakshmi Puja

Homes are lit with diyas and paper lanterns, and families perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening. Goa's temples are busy over the festival. The Shri Mangueshi and Shri Shantadurga temples near Ponda are among the best known and are worth a visit.

Why spend Diwali in a private villa

  • Everyone under one roof. Our villas have en-suite bedrooms, so grandparents, parents and children each get their own room, with a shared living space for the evening.
  • Space for your own rituals. Set up a small puja, draw a rangoli at the entrance and light diyas around the garden and pool.
  • Festive meals at home. Most of our Goa villas come with a private cook for three meals a day, with groceries billed at actual cost.
  • Staff on hand. A property manager, caretaker and daily housekeeping look after the house, so you can focus on family.
  • An easy pace. The season is just starting, so beaches are calm and roads are easier than in December.

Diwali in Goa: planning tips

  1. Book now. Diwali is days away, and the long weekend is popular with families from across India.
  2. Be flexible by a day. Arriving on Saturday or leaving on Wednesday can open up villas that are booked for the main weekend.
  3. Ask about diyas, rangoli and fireworks. Most villas are happy for guests to light diyas. Fireworks and open flames near the pool or garden are covered by house rules, so check before you arrive.
  4. Plan Narakasur night in advance. Arrange a driver for the evening. Town centres get crowded and parking is hard.
  5. Tell us about food. If you need a vegetarian, Jain or no-onion-no-garlic menu, tell us when you book so the cook can plan.
  6. Check what is open. Some shacks and restaurants are still reopening in early November. Our Goa in November guide explains more.

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in 2026?

Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. In Goa, Narakasur celebrations take place on the night of Saturday, 7 November, and the effigies are burned in the early hours of Sunday.

Is Diwali a good time to visit Goa?

Yes. The Green Season is over, the weather is warm and dry, and the December crowds have not arrived. You also see a side of Goa that most visitors miss.

Where can I see Narakasur effigies in Goa?

Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Ponda and Vasco are known for the biggest effigies, and many villages put up their own. Visitors are welcome to watch. Go with a driver and keep a safe distance when they are set alight.

Can we cook a festive meal at the villa?

Yes. Most of our Goa villas include a private cook for three meals a day, with groceries billed at actual cost. Share your festive menu with us in advance.

Can we burst crackers at the villa?

It depends on the villa. Some allow small, supervised fireworks in the garden and others do not. Ask us before you book.

Is Goa crowded during Diwali?

It is busier than the weeks around it, especially over the long weekend, but much quieter than Christmas and New Year.
